What is possible, and when
Flying in 24 to 72 hours
Meningitis ACWY, hepatitis A and typhoid still protect you. Some antimalarials can also be started close to departure after assessment.
Flying within a week
Enough time for single-dose cover plus the first dose of any course, with the remainder finished after you return where the schedule allows.
Flying in two to three weeks
Accelerated rabies and hepatitis B schedules become possible, and combined hepatitis A and typhoid can be given in one injection.
Courses we can compress
- Rabies
Accelerated three-dose schedule over 7 days where the standard 21-day course will not fit.
- Hepatitis B
Rapid schedule at days 0, 7 and 21, with a booster at 12 months.
- Japanese encephalitis
Two doses seven days apart for adults, rather than the standard 28-day gap.
Suitability is decided in the appointment. Not every accelerated schedule is right for every traveller.
Last-minute questions
Yes. Several important vaccines are single dose and start working quickly, and most antimalarials can be started right before departure. A pharmacist will be honest with you about what will and will not have taken effect in time.
Not always. Some courses need more than one dose and some entry certificates have fixed timing rules. The pharmacist will explain what can still help before you leave.
Yes. Most travel vaccines can be given together safely in the same visit, in different arms.
