Travel health: what to sort before you fly

A well-planned trip starts long before you pack the suitcase. Here is what our travel clinic recommends you sort out first.

Your pre-travel timeline

  1. 1

As soon as you book the trip

Get a travel appointment in the diary. Some vaccines need more than one dose, so the earlier we see you the more we can fit in. Leaving next week? Come in anyway, plenty still helps.

  2. 2

    Two weeks before

Refill any regular prescriptions and pack a small supply in your hand luggage. Check the entry rules for medication in your destination country.

  3. 3

    On the day of travel

Wear compression socks on long flights, drink water regularly and set an alarm for time-sensitive medication if you cross time zones.

Travel first aid essentials

  • Paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • Rehydration sachets
  • Antihistamines
  • Plasters and antiseptic wipes
  • High factor SPF and after sun
  • Insect repellent with DEET

The most common travel issue we see is preventable stomach upset. A little planning goes a very long way. Have a lovely trip.
