Winter in Slough brings shorter days, colder mornings and the annual reminder to look after your health. The good news is that a few consistent habits can make a real difference to how you feel between now and spring.
Book your flu jab early
Flu circulates through the community from October onwards. The vaccine takes around two weeks to build full protection, so booking early gives you the best chance of a symptom-free winter. Eligible patients can have theirs free of charge.
Look after your immune system
There is no magic supplement, but the fundamentals still hold: sleep well, move daily, eat plenty of colourful vegetables and stay hydrated. If you are not getting sunlight, a daily vitamin D supplement is worth considering.
Simple daily checklist
- Get outside for at least 20 minutes of daylight
- Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep
- Wash hands regularly, especially before eating
- Drink water throughout the day, not just when thirsty
When to ask a pharmacist
You do not need a GP appointment for many winter concerns. Under the Pharmacy First scheme we can now assess and treat seven common conditions including sinusitis, sore throat and shingles. Pop in and we will help.
