About Cholera
Cholera causes sudden, severe watery diarrhoea and dangerous dehydration. Tourists on standard itineraries rarely catch it, but outbreak zones and refugee settings are a different matter.
The vaccine is taken by mouth rather than injected, with a one to six week gap between the two doses, so it needs a little planning.
It also offers some limited, short-lived protection against one type of travellers' diarrhoea, which is a useful side benefit for remote trips.
Normal and accelerated schedules

First oral dose, taken on an empty stomach.

1 to 6 weeks later, and at least a week before you travel.
Who needs it
- Aid workers, medical volunteers and disaster relief staff
- Travellers to current outbreak areas or areas with damaged sanitation
- People with reduced stomach acid or significant chronic illness travelling to risk areas
- Avoid food and drink for an hour either side of each dose.
- The full course needs at least a week to complete before departure.
- Safe water and hand hygiene remain your first line of defence.
