About Typhoid
Typhoid is a bacterial infection of the gut caught from contaminated food and water. It causes prolonged high fever and can be severe without prompt antibiotics.
The UK sees most of its imported cases in travellers returning from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, particularly people visiting family where the usual tourist food precautions are hard to apply.
Drug-resistant strains are increasing in Pakistan, which makes prevention more valuable than it once was.
Normal and accelerated schedules

One injection, ideally two weeks before travel.

Every 3 years if you continue to travel to risk areas.
Who needs it
- Travellers to South Asia, Africa, Latin America and parts of Southeast Asia
- People staying with family or in rural areas rather than hotels
- Anyone with a longer stay or repeated trips to risk countries
- The vaccine is not 100 per cent effective, so food and water care still matters.
- The combined typhoid and hepatitis A injection saves a separate appointment.
- Seek medical advice quickly for any fever within three weeks of returning.
